Bharti Group chairman Sunil Mittal has welcomed a decision of top Chinese telecom carriers to back global telecom body GSMA’s recent call to eliminate domestic roaming fees.

Three state-run Chinese telcos – China Mobile Communications, China Telecommunications Corp and China United Network Communications Group – on Monday said they plan to scrap domestic roaming fees and offer pricing incentives to small and mid-sized enterprises, to encourage corporate customers to adopt network technology such as cloud computing.

We are extremely delighted that GSMA’s call to bring an end to domestic roaming fees has received resounding support from the leading operators in China, the largest telecoms market in the world,” said Mittal, in an official statement Monday.

Mittal, who is also GSMA chairman, said elimination of domestic roaming fees “will not just promote customer convenience by ending bill shocks but also help boost usage by customers through adoption of network technologies to augment productivity, innovation and economic growth”.

The three Chinese companies reportedly said they would end inter-province roaming fees by October. Even their Hong Kong-listed units — China Telecom Corp, China Mobile Ltd and China Unicom Hong Kong — will also have discount pricing schemes for businesses.
