Bharti Airtel's consumer director to join German incumbent in October.
Last week Deutsche Telekom announced that it had appointed a replacement for Claudia Nemat as its board member for Europe, but was unable to name the newcomer as per a request from his current employer.
Now it has announced that SriniGopalan, consumer director at BhartiAirtel, will join the company on 1 October and will take over Nemat's duties following an initial transition period.
Nemat will begin her new role as head of Deutsche Telekom's new Technology & Innovation business – created by the German incumbent to reflect ongoing technological developments, namely the move toward software-defined networking (SDN), virtualisation, and cloud services – on 1 January, at which point she will relinquish responsibility for Europe.
"I look forward to working with SriniGopalan," said Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges. "We're strengthening technology and IT with the new board department on the one hand, while on the other hand we're strengthening our expertise on marketing and sales with our new head of Europe who has extensive experience with consumers."
Indeed, in his current role, Gopalan is responsible for Bharti's consumer business in 23 regions of India, covering broadband, satellite TV and mobile services.
He also has significant experience in the U.K. telecoms industry, having served as chief marketing officer at T-Mobile during its merger with Orange's U.K. unit which created EE. He also spent three years as director of Vodafone UK's consumer business unit.
