China Telecom added a net 5.81 million 4G subscribers in March, an increase on previous months, it announced on Thursday alongside a set of solid financial results for the first quarter of the year.
The telco's 4G net additions came in at 16.45 million in Q1, giving it a total 4G base of 74.91 million. Its overall customer base grew by 4.74 million during the first three months of the year to 202.64 million.
"For the first quarter of 2016, the group firmly seized the 4G development opportunities and achieved rapid growth in 4G users and mobile service revenues," China Telecom said, in a statement.
The operator did not split out mobile service revenues for the quarter, but its overall service revenues – including the wireline business – came in at 76.36 billion yuan (€10.4 billion), up 5% on the same quarter a year ago.
Operating revenue grew by 6.1% to CNY86.43 billion.
EBITDA slid by 2.9% to CNY23.81 billion, but net profit grew by 1.4% to CNY5.12 billion (€696 million).
In addition to its mobile arm, China Telecom also has a robust fixed-line business.
"The fundamentals of the overall wireline services continued to remain stable and the revenues from wireline services increased steadily," it said, without providing figures.
Its fixed-lines in service fell by 1.46 million in the first quarter to 132.86 million, but it recorded 3.11 million net adds at its fixed broadband business, taking its total to 116.17 million.
The telco's wireline data services segment "continued its robust growth momentum, which effectively offset the impact of decline in the wireline voice services," China Telecom said.
