Qualcomm Technologies, the subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, has successfully achieved a 5G connection on a 5G modern chipset designed specifically for mobile devices.
In addition to achieving a 5G connection on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset, which hit gigabit speeds and realised a data connection in the 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band, the company also previewed its first 5G smartphone reference design. The latter can be utilised to test and streamline 5G technology on various smartphone designs.
Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and president, QCT, said: "Achieving the world's first announced 5G data connection with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset on 28GHz mmWave spectrum is truly a testament to Qualcomm Technologies' leadership in 5G and extensive expertise in mobile connectivity."
"This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world."
Showcased in the company's laboratories in San Diego, the successful 5G data connection utilised several 100 MHz 5G carriers. Additionally, the demonstration incorporated the use of SDR051 mmWave RF transceiver integrated circuit, as well as Keysight Technologies' 5G Protocol R&D Toolset and UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform.
The company has revealed that its Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family is set to support commercial launches of 5G smartphones all the way to the first half of 2019.
