China's Internet Users Total 710 Million
China has 710 million Internet users as of June, accountingfor 51.7 percent of its total population, exceeding the global average by 3.1percent,according to an official report released by the China Internet Network InformationCenter (CNNIC) on Wednesday.
China gained about 21.3 million new web users in the first half of 2016, an increase of 1.3percent compared with figures from the end of 2015, the report said.
The report noted that 191 million people, almost 27 percent total Internet users were fromrural areas, marking a huge gap of 35.6 percent in the Internet penetration rate betweenurban and rural areas.
The number of people surfing the Internet via smartphones reached 656 million, about92.5 percent of Internet users, the report said.
Japan Starts 8K TV Broadcasts in Time for Rio Olympics
Japan began the world's first regular 8K television broadcasts on Monday, five days ahead of the opening of the Olympic Games.
8K refers to broadcasts with a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels. That's 16 times the resolution of today's full high-definition (FHD) broadcasts and four times that of the 4K standard, which is only just emerging in many other countries. (See chart below)
The format used by NHK, which it calls "Super Hi-Vision," also features 22.2-channel surround sound.
Public broadcaster NHK launched a satellite channel that will broadcast a mix of 8K and 4K content as it prepares to launch full-scale 8K transmissions in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.


MIIT Announces Telecom Industry Economic Performance of 1H16
Recently MIIT announced the economic performance of telecom industry in the first half of this year officially.

China's telecom service revenue was CNY 611.28 billion in 1H16 with a 5.6% YoY increase while its total operating revenue increased 47.7% to CNY 1.57868 trillion.
In June, the service revenue of China's three major operators totally hit CNY 102.66 billion, showing a 7.2% YoY growth and a 0.3% month-to-month increase. A 50.7% YoY increase happened to the total operating revenue CNY 284.92 billion.
China Mobile maintained better growth, compared with the other two giants.
