Global spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) is forecast to reach $772.5 billion in 2018, an increase of 14.6% from the previous year, according to a new report by IDC.
IDC’s Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide forecasts worldwide IoT spending will sustain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.4% through 2017-2021, surpassing the $1 trillion mark in 2020 and reaching $1.1 trillion in 2021.
IoT hardware will be the largest technology category in 2018, with $239 billion going largely toward modules and sensors along with some spending on infrastructure and security.
Services will be the second largest technology category, followed by software and connectivity. Software spending will be led by application software along with analytics software, IoT platforms and security software. Software will also be the fastest growing technology segment with a five-year CAGR of 16.1%. Services spending will also grow at a faster rate than overall spending with a CAGR of 15.1% and will nearly equal hardware spending by the end of the forecast.

IoT Briefs: Qualcomm, Alibaba Join Forces to Drive LTE IoT in China
Qualcomm and Alibaba have joined forces to boost LTE IoT deployment in China by pre-integrating the Alibaba Cloud Link One on to the MDM9206 multi-mode LTE IoT modem. The move enables module manufacturers and IoT developers to quickly develop and deploy solutions that connect with the Alibaba Cloud using LTE IoT connectivity and client software running directly on the LTE system-on-chip (SoC). The integration also helps address a vast array of the existing and emerging LTE IoT use cases, including smart transportation (e.g. bike sharing), smart cities as well as industrial IoT applications in areas such as smart grid, smart metering (e.g. electricity, gas, water), asset tracking and more, Qualcomm said in a statement.

SoftBank, Vayyar Team on IoT
SoftBank and Israel-based Vayyar Imaging have formed a partnership to jointly develop products and solutions for IoT imaging in Japan.
Under the partnership, the pair will collaborate in the IoT field to support all manner of use cases, including pioneering applications for Vayyar products, combining Vayyar's PoC (Proof of Concept) products with SoftBank's IoT platforms and solutions, and linking Vayyar products with AI, Softbank said in a statement.
SoftBank will also become the channel priority partner for Vayyar’s existing products in Japan.
Established in 2011, Vayyar develops and markets 3D imaging sensors that can see through human tissue and most man-made surfaces and skin using radio waves. The company the market leader in radio waves based 3D imaging sensors and has a strong track record developing products for the consumer and industrial markets.

Australian operator Optus has handed Nokia a five-year contract to manage the operation and maintenance of key components of the operator's network infrastructure.
