US operator T-Mobile is facing a potential roadblock in its proposed $26.5 billion acquisition of Sprint, with the Communications Workers of America union objecting to the plan due in part to the potential for large-scale job cuts.
The union has filed a submission to regulator FCC arguing that the merger would result in the loss of more than 28,500 jobs as a result of the closure of overlapping retail stores and eliminating duplicate corporate positions, Bloomberg reported.
Despite claims from the operators that a merger is needed to help the combined company cover the costs of a 5G rollout, the union also argued that the companies have given no demonstration that the merged company would have either the incentive or ability to provide quality 5G services outside of densely populated areas.more>>
Singtel, KVH aim to digitalize APAC's maritime sector
Singtel has announced a new partnership with global satellite and maritime communications provider KVH Industries to accelerate the digitalization of the maritime sector in Asia-Pacific.
The companies will jointly provide a broadband satellite service with KVH's mini-VSAT Broadband satellite connectivity solution for shipping companies in the region.
Singtel will provide its maritime customers with KVH's product and service offerings, including a subscription-based connectivity solutions.more>>
Viettel joins ngena alliance
Vietnam's Viettel has joined the Next Generation Enterprise Network Alliance (ngena) to allow the operator to provide SD-WAN services for enterprise customers.
Viettel is targeting business customers in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos with the service.
Doan Dai Phong, director of the Viettel International Business Center, said joining ngena will allow the operator to sell global VPN solutions to its enterprise customers.
“ngena has been our SD-WAN provider of choice as it enables us to provide globally, consistent services while maintaining full control over the customer experience,” he said.more>>
