Thailand announces $125m rural broadband subsidy
Thailand's telecoms regulator NBTC plans to provide 4 billion baht ($125.2 million) worth of subsidies for fixed broadband services in border villages as part of its efforts to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.
The three-year subsidy will be provided in support of Thailand's Universal Service Obligation (USO) Net project, the Bangkok Post reported.
The USO Net project, involving the deployment of a fiber network, free Wi-Fi hotspots and mobile access nodes across 3,920 villages in 62 provinces across the nation, is due to be completed in March.
Project winners will be required to provide broadband packages offering speeds of 30Mbps for 200 baht per month. The subsidies will be used to ensure the services are affordable to the 600,000 low-income households in border villages that cannot afford these prices. more>>
Cloud-native IMS VoLTE core revenue to grow 60% in 2019
The outlook for IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is positive. This is outlined in a Dell’Oro group report, which forecasts revenues for the cloud-native IMS VoLTE core to accelerate in 2019 to more than 60% growth over 2018. In 3Q2018, Nokia lead the global market.
“Moving to the cloud with cloud-native software is now a material part of the IMS VoLTE core revenue as service providers prepare their networks for 5G. The same IMS VoLTE core will be used in 5G, paving the way for a more robust and resilient network,” stated David Bolan, senior analyst at Dell’Oro Group.
“The VoLTE outlook for 2019 looks bright with several announcements during the quarter: Nokia is upgrading part of China Unicom’s VoLTE network, T-Mobile will use Ericsson as one of their VoLTE suppliers, and Telefónica Deutschland selected Mavenir for a VoLTE upgrade,” Bolan continued. more>>
