China's dash to 5G may not be quite as hectic as originally thought.
When the industry ministry unexpectedly issued 5G commercial licenses in June, it was a signal in the middle of the trade war that it was putting its foot to the floor to steal a march on rival countries.
But the operators may not have the same enthusiasm or resources.
And with the industry mired in low growth, analysts are starting to wonder how operators can sustain a national buildout that may cost more than $400 billion.

South Korean 5G: Desperately Seeking Profits
South Korea has taken an early lead in the international 5G race. By June, more than a million of the Asian country's smartphone addicts, who remain glued to their screens even when dodging traffic, had become 5G customers.
The number keeps rising: SK Telecom, the 5G frontrunner, expects to have more than 2 million 5G customers on its own network by the end of the year.
But the 5G frenzy has led to mixed fortunes for operators. Financial results published by SK Telecom and KT, the country's two largest telcos, highlight increases in service revenues fueled by 5G take-up. The costs of providing 5G, however, has meant there was also a slump in profitability at both companies.

Vietnam Puts 5G on Fast Track
Vietnam is making a tilt at the front ranks of telecom with an ambitious 5G timetable. Its biggest operators are running 5G field trials and aim to have commercial services running next year.
If achieved, that would put them close behind the region's leaders, Korea and China.
The biggest local operator, Viettel, which carried out Vietnam's first 5G end-to-end 5G connection in May, has deployed 70 trial base stations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.more>>
Gloom Persists for Europe's Long-Suffering Telco Investors
Investors in Europe's biggest telecom operators have had a stomach-churning ride for the past three-and-a-half years, as the chart published below indicates. Every one of the region's "big six" telcos has witnessed a double-digit percentage fall in its share price since December 2015, with the long-suffering BT and Telecom Italia experiencing the most vertiginous drops.
The loss of shareholder value reflects the difficulties companies face in some of the world's most competitive markets, where authorities sticking up for consumer interests remain stubbornly opposed to merger activity. Competition may grow fiercer with the launch of next-generation 5G networks, too. Italy's Fastweb this week secured a license to build a fifth mobile network after Germany's Drillisch recently picked up the 5G spectrum it needs to erect a fourth German network.

Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco Pull US Operators Toward Standalone 5G US operators such as T-Mobile and Verizon are taking their first tentative steps toward the "standalone" version of 5G with public tests of the technology. And commercial launches could happen as early as next year.
Most recently, T-Mobile announced it conducted a standalone end-to-end 5G data session with equipment from multiple vendors. "The over-the-air transmission marks a giant leap forward in realizing the true potential of 5G with new services, ultra-low latency, and even greater coverage and capacity than existing networks," the operator crowed in a release.
Ericsson, Nokia at front of queue for Orange 5G contracts France will soon become the last of the major western European economies to hold an auction of 5G spectrum, giving its operators the licenses they need to launch the next-generation mobile technology. That will be a welcome development to Ericsson and Nokia, both of which must be at the front of the queue for contracts with France's biggest telco.
Orange, which has already announced plans to launch commercial 5G services next year, has built the entirety of its existing radio access network (RAN) with the Swedish and Finnish suppliers, relying on their gear for its 2G, 3G and 4G systems. Stephane Richard, its CEO, has also ruled out the use of Huawei as a 5G vendor in France amid security concerns about the Chinese company.
Huawei bans and spectrum delays hit 5G plans in Australia, New Zealand Some Australian and New Zealand operators are getting a jump on their rivals with their access to 5G spectrum.
Telstra and Optus in Australia have both begun commercial 5G even though the designated 3.6GHz band won't be available until March 2020.
When regulator ACMA auctioned the spectrum last December, Telstra acquired 143 5MHz lots of 3.6GHz and Optus picked 47 lots.
