Edge computing, particularly in the mobile and 5G space, remains more of a theoretical concept than a widespread investment or revenue opportunity. But that isn't stopping some of the biggest companies in the industry from placing some bets on the space.
First up is Intel, which announced the $27 million purchase of Smart Edge from IT company Pivot Technology Solutions. The purchase, which Intel said would close in a few weeks, includes the transfer of 25 Smart Edge employees into Intel's Network and Custom Logic Group (NCLG).

The Edge Is Coming but Are Networks Ready?
Edge computing brings high-performance storage, compute and network resources closer to users and devices than ever before. The goals of this approach include lowering the cost of data transport, decreasing latency and increasing locality.
This trend runs directly counter to the historical approach of housing compute and storage in a small number of massive (or hyperscale) data centers placed in often remote locations to minimize the operations costs of running them. Thus, with edge computing, the pendulum is moving from a centralized cloud architecture to a highly distributed one.

What Might the Demand Be for 5G in Manufacturing?
According to a new report from the analysts at Wall Street firm New Street Research, the FCC will likely vote in November to free up 300MHz of spectrum in the C-Band for 5G.
At least, that's the conclusion that the analysts have drawn from a new round of filings on the topic at the FCC. The C-Band remains a topic of hot debate among companies in the wireless, satellite and media industries. Wireless companies have been clamoring for the agency to release more mid-band spectrum like the C-Band for 5G; they argue such spectrum provides the right balance between coverage and capacity, and that it will aid the US in its "race" against China to 5G. Satellite and media companies, meantime, have warned that they make extensive use of the C-Band and that the FCC should not embark on extensive changes to the band.more>>
AT&T, Verizon Hope 5G & Edge Computing Save VR
5G networks of the future could well meet the demands of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) technology. And wireless carriers are working to make that happen.
Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Google and others have been eyeing AR/VR as the next big tech platform, and all have made investments in this area. But so far, AR/VR has suffered from disappointing user experiences and bulky hardware. The situation is so bad some have exited the VR space altogether.

Tower Owner SBA Buys Data Center for Edge Computing Know-How Cell tower owner SBA Communications said it purchased a data center in Chicago last month in order to learn about the edge computing opportunity.
"We're going to use it as an R&D facility," explained SBA's chief executive Jeffrey Stoops in comments at a recent investor event. He said the data center, called New Continuum, was built like a "vault" to handle computing functions for the US government, and that SBA's acquisition of the data center also includes a small loop of fiber in downtown Chicago. Stoops wouldn't disclose the purchase price for the data center, but SBA apparently swung a sweet deal. The facility, which hosts a mix of retail and wholesale operations, will be "totally immaterial" to SBA's overall financial situation, according to Stoops.
Vodafone puts its faith in Google Cloud for big data analytics The US tech giants have already infiltrated parts of the telco business, most notably with the launch of "chatbots" that replace customer care assistants and use artificial intelligence (AI) built by the likes of IBM and Microsoft. Now they are entering the systems that operators use to manage operations and serve customers: Days after striking a deal with Telecom Italia, Google has announced a similar contract with Vodafone. More could lie ahead.
Until now, the UK-headquartered operator has been using an on-premises data platform to glean insights about its business in 11 countries. That platform requires 600 servers in eight clusters and relies on Hadoop, a set of open-source software tools. In a sign of rapid change, it is beginning to show cracks as Vodafone's data demands grow.
Telecom Italia strikes edge alliance with Google as sales slide Telecom Italia opened the door to a major strategic alliance with Google on the development of edge computing services as it reported dwindling sales for its fiscal third quarter.
The Italian operator is setting up a standalone company to manage its data centers and cloud services and will partner with Google on "go-to-market initiatives," it said in a statement issued this morning.
While details are thin, Telecom Italia said it was planning to hire another 800 cloud engineers and make investments in building new data centers to support edge computing services.
