5G and Huawei dominated Asia in 2019
Two topics dominated developments in Asia's telecoms sector in 2019 -- 5G and Huawei.
In 5G, the large early rollouts by South Korea and China set the global pace.
Korea won bragging rights by deploying the first commercial scale 5G services in a coordinated debut by all three operators in early April. They racked up 2 million subs in the first four months and are expected to reach 5 million by the year's end.
Nokia Lands Another 4G/5G Private Network Deal
Nokia has added to its already impressive roster of private wireless network deals by adding Brussels airport to its expansive list of customers.
The Finnish vendor is working with Citymesh, a Belgian company that builds, manages and maintains large private wireless networks, to develop a private cellular network for the airport. Nokia is supplying its Digital Automation Cloud platform and radio gear that will initially enable LTE-Advanced services (Nokia uses the term 4.9G), but will also support 5G in the future.
Cisco Acquires Exablaze for Ultra-Low-Latency Networking Boost
Cisco got itself a little stocking stuffer for the holidays, snapping up Exablaze, a 31-person Australian networking company specializing in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology for ultra-low-latency applications such as high-frequency trading and emerging telco services such as 5G and edge.
Exablaze supplies ultra-low-latency Layer 1 FPGA-based switches and network interface cards (NICs) as well as picosecond resolution timing technology, Cisco says in a statement.
