The Singapore regulator, as expected, has awarded its two 5G licenses to incumbent local operators.
One went to market leader SingTel and the other to a JV between the second- and third-largest telcos, StarHub and M1.
A bid from the newest operator, Australian-owned TPG, which had teamed up with a local conglomerate, was rejected.
However, it will be able to offer 5G service as an MVNO or through local 5G hotspots using mmWave, regulator IMDA said Thursday.
In a departure from earlier years, the licenses were awarded through a "beauty contest" process.

Brits lead the world on 5G mast burning
Brits under lockdown. It could be a new Sky series, a sort of neighbors-from-hell documentary aimed at Brexit-bothered Europeans, to whom the British have long been a bunch of pasty-faced, beer-swilling malcontents.
But those disregarding the lockdown (and various other inconvenient laws about property damage) to burn down 5G masts would have to open the show. While networks have been damaged in other countries, Europeans just haven't entered into the whole spirit of mast burning with the same enthusiasm as the Brits. It's become as peculiarly British as cheese rolling or gurning – just as bonkers and yet far more damaging. Unless someone is in the path of a large, high-speed cheese, that is.

Telecom revenue to be hit by COVID-19 fallout in 2020, report says
A new report from Analysys Mason predicts that telecom revenue in developed markets will drop 3.4% year-on-year in 2020, although the sector is expected to hold up relatively well as COVID-19 keeps much of the world in lockdown.
The analyst firm had previously forecast growth of 0.7% in 2020 and 0.8% in 2021, but it said operators in developed economies are set to experience "lost" revenue of more than $40 billion each year. Growth of 0.8% is still predicted for 2021, "driven by pent-up demand in consumer broadband."
Telecom is regarded as a more resilient sector than most, performing ahead of general GDP trends. Analysys Mason expects telecom and pay-TV services to account for 2% of GDP in 2020, an increase from 1.9% in 2019. Consumer services account for 68% of telecom revenue, but the sector has been adversely affected by increases in unemployment, business closures and the overall decrease in economic activity.

Nokia takes €200M hit from COVID-19 but manages wafer-thin profit Nokia has blamed the impact of the coronavirus for a €200 million ($218 million) hit to first-quarter sales and lowered profit targets for the year amid the economic uncertainty the virus has generated in its main addressable markets.
The Finnish equipment maker appeared to miss analyst expectations as it recorded a 3% drop in net sales, to about €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion), compared with the year-earlier quarter.
Microsoft cloud has a COVID-19 silver lining Microsoft is thriving business-wise from the coronavirus outbreak. Lockdown measures have given a huge fillip to the software giant's cloud business and helped margins keep firm.
The software giant posted a 15% year-on-year increase in revenue, to $35 billion, during fiscal Q3 (ended March 31). Earnings per share, at $1.40, was well ahead of forecasts.
India's Airtel awards massive network deal to Nokia Indian telco giant Bharti Airtel has handed a massive contract to Finnish equipment maker Nokia for the rollout of a single radio access network (SRAN) in some of India's busiest communities. While the value of the deal was not cited in the official statements, it is reportedly worth about $1 billion.
Under the agreement, Nokia will deploy 300,000 radio units in nine circles (service areas) for the expansion of Airtel's 4G network over the next two years. The deployment will be across several spectrum bands, including 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz and 2300MHz. The nine circles seem likely to be those in which Nokia had previously supplied equipment, which, according to media reports, are Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rest of Bengal, Odisha, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Kerala and UP (East).
Qualcomm: The 5G outlook is still good Qualcomm still expects global 5G handset shipments this year of between 175 and 225 million. That's the prediction the company provided before the COVID-19 outbreak, and that's the figure it's sticking with.
"Launches [of 5G] across all regions remain on track," Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala said during the company's quarterly conference call with analysts Wednesday. "While we expect some minor changes to the launch timing and sell-through of certain devices, our calendar 2020 estimates remain unchanged."

5G digitalization brings a trillion-dollar services opportunity for ICT market, and FiberHome is READY Hengtong has launched two novel 180 micron SMF, BoneCom®Smini-G.652.D series used for MAN and trunk transmission network and BendCom®Smini-G.657.A2 series with excellent bending performance. Compared with the traditional 245 micron fiber and 200 micron small diameter fiber, the novel fiber has a smaller size of 180 microns, a reduction of around 30% and 10% respectively. The fiber has less cost, better attenuation and more stable cabling process when applied to ultra-small air blowing micro cable and ultra-dense optical cable.
Hengtong India Is Together With Local Communities Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) today announced a series of smaller, denser additions to its portfolio of long-haul fiber and cable innovations, including the world’s first submarine and terrestrial long-haul fibers in a 200-micron diameter.
The fiber and cable innovations are designed to help network operators stay ahead of bandwidth needs driven by 5G in access networks, as well as high-performance applications like augmented reality and artificial intelligence in hyperscale data centers. They build on Corning’s fiber, cable and connectivity innovations by simplifying installation, extending capacity and reach, and providing enhanced density for today’s space-constrained environments.
