India Splits Comms and IT Ministries, Names New Telecoms Head
Manoj Sinha becomes India's new telecoms minister after Modi shuffles jobs, moving Ravi Shankar Prasad to law ministry.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shuffled his ministers, in the process splitting the communications and IT ministry and appointing a new custodian of the telecoms portfolio.
Former telecoms and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad takes up a new post as law and justice minister, as well as retaining control of electronics and information technology.
Meanwhile, railways minister Manoj Sinha takes on communications, in addition to his existing role.
The change comes at a pivotal time for India's telecoms sector.
China Stresses App Obligations in Information Security
BEIJING, June 28 -- Mobile app providers must fulfill "six obligations" when operating inChina, including requiring realname registration and preserving records of their users'activity for at least two months, a new regulation has made clear. Firstly, app providers must verify users' identities by requiring mobile phone numbers orother information, according to the regulation released by the Cyberspace Administrationof China on Tuesday.
Secondly, they should protect users' information and cannot use the information withoutthe users' consent.
FTTH Becomes Mainstream Fixed Broadband Access Technology in China
Recently, Ao Li, deputy director of Standard Institute of CATR (China Academy of Telecommunication Research) of MIIT, said FTTH covered 446 million residences in China in 2015 with a 74.3% YoY increase, ten times more than that in 2011, while fiber access ports hit 269 million, 4G base stations 1.771 million.
FTTH, xDSL and LAN catch 56.4%, 23.5% and 19% of fixed broadband users in China respectively in 2015.
Subscribers of broadband with access speed of 20 M or above accounted for 33.4% of the total fixed broadband users in China.
